Inspirational Mutt and Meows
Here are our Mutt and Meow hopefuls! The pets below have been confirmed as official entries in the 2013 SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year online competition. Read through their heartwarming stories and decide which ones you think deserve to be in the running for Mutt or Meow of the Year.
Then click on the "Vote for Me!" button for your favourite pet and you will be taken to a page where you can "vote" for them. Voting for your favourite pet is done in the form of a donation, so every vote counts – not only to the contestants, but to the SPCA and the animals in our care.
The more that vote, and the more you donate, the greater the chance that pet has of being awarded the Mutt or Meow titles, or winning the title of Fundraiser Mutt or Meow of the Year.
Talulah
While visiting the COGH SPCA in December 2012, we bumped into a friend who was working in the Hospital. He showed us a sad, terrified and broken little dog that had been abused and was found with a badly broken hind leg, who happen to look identical to our other dog at home. My boyfriend [...]
Mr Pip
Mr Pips was dumped at Malmesbury Animal Welfare to be put down because he was not wanted! Fortunately he was taken in by Border Collie rescue, who kept him for 5 months and then gave him to us as they felt they didn’t have time to develop his potential. He is highly intelligent, mischievous and adorable! [...]
Odin
He is the cutest, most well-behaved, energetic, enthusiastic, loving, and gentle mutt that I have ever seen! I just have to share him with everybody.
Lourdes
Three years ago, after the sad passing of our previous dog, we adopted Lourdes from PETS. I started searching for my new best friend and realised how many dogs there were in shelters and in need of a new family. I told my parents that we are going to adopt a dog from a shelter [...]
Zulu
A true, rags to riches story. Zulu become a part of my life after having spent the first few months of his life in a township being abused by children. When I first got him he had been rescued by a charity worker who advertised him on gumtree. He had no fur, was disease ridden [...]
Bruno
We adopted Bruno from the Waltloo SPCA at the beginning of December 2012. He was underfed, unhappy in the kennel and all he wanted was someone to cuddle him. Well, we gave him everything he could want. He is now thoroughly spoiled. Despite being a pure breed, he is a mutt at heart. He crept [...]
Linus
As I sit here Linus, our gorgeous boy, lies with his head on a purple bandaged paw. He has recently undergone an operation to remove a growth on his pad. When Linus was taken home from the SPCA at ten weeks his tiny neck was so small that his collar couldn’t be made tight enough [...]
Frieda
After a suitable period of mourning when our two old ladies passed on, about a year apart, we decided it was time to consider getting “a” dog again. I approached a well known animal rescue organisation who came and did a home check. To my total heartbreak I was turned down as a suitable animal [...]
Boodie
Boodie was rescued after being chained up for so long that the chain was embedded in his neck. In the 2 years that he has been a family member he has developed into the most adorable, kind, patient and intelligent companion. He attends advanced obedience, where he is 1 of only 2 dogs advanced enough [...]
Maddy
Maddy was rescued from a township by Tears and we were fortunate enough for God to bless us with this beautiful little furry angel! Maddy was definitely abused previously, her back and ears have been burnt. Despite this Maddy loves and trusts us like she has forgotten how cruel humans can be! Maddy is our [...]
Porsche
I’m a lousy Pitbull! Anything but dangerous and vicious. My favourite spot to cuddle is on your lap – think I was a Maltese poodle or smaller breed dog in a previous life but I’m lucky, my family doesn’t seem to mind too much. And I take my role as “the Nanny dog”rather seriously. You [...]
sasha
If looks could kill I would’ve been in heaven now. Everyone says Husky’s are not suitable pets but disagree!!!
Cadbury (Caddy Berry Pie)
Adopted 2 May 2012 from wetnose. This girl found me, she is my keeper and completes me. We had an instant connection, and in a years time we have grown inseparable. She did not know what grass is, a bed, a couch or stairs. She was abused, that was clearly visible in her bahaviour. I [...]
Buddha
Buddha is not a native South African, and neither am I. I rescued him two years ago from Miami Dade Animal Services in Miami, Florida. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had just learned that Pit bulls and pit mixes are illegal in the entire county, and that every single [...]
Lizzy
I never had any animals and did not care. Then a cat moved in with us and the love started. I got involved with welfare and started fostering cats. In the beginning it was not easy to let go, but I forced myself to keep doing it for the benefit of the animals. Everyone asked [...]
Smokey
I consider the day Smokey came into our lives, 10 April 2010, as one of the best days of my life. She was a tiny little feral ‘noe-noe’ when rescued by my husband; barely weighing a few 100 grams. We had to hand feed her in the beginning. Immediately we realized that something was amiss [...]
Pula
Pula however wasn’t adopted but was a big surprise pup when our Great Dane got two unsuspected puppies (unfortunately the other pup died at birth making Pula the only survivor. She is a Great Dane x Boerboel and its the best dog i have ever had! Not the smartest however but the most lovable dog [...]
Lily
Lily is our 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier! She is full of energy and has loads of attitude. She rules our house and is always on her brothers case (a 2 year old Jack Russell), Lily always wanting to play or instigate some sort of mischief in the garden. The two of them love [...]
Nelly Loof
My dog Nelly is not only my dog, or my friend, but my family. She has been with me for 8 years now. Since the day I got her I knew I would love her forever. When my family moved to Sweden, she was on the next flight after us, I would bring her anywhere! [...]
Pixie
Pixie is a 4 month old Feral kitten which I adopted from Cat Care Port Elizabeth. She is an enormously inquisitive kitten and behaves more like a dog in a lot of ways: She comes when called and responds immediately to her name. Because of the environment being a bit overgrown where I live in [...]
Deno
Deno is the sweetest and most energetic dog in the whole world! He loves playing with me in the garden and loves going for walks. Whenever he wants to go for a walk he will sit and stare at the leash until we take him. He really enjoys dragging me down the road. Another one [...]
Zahra
I adopted Zahra from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League when I realized that my four-year old rescue dog, Rusty, was starting to suffer badly from back problems; meaning he didn’t want to engage in any kind of play with his female fur-sister, Xena, anymore. Zahra was meant as a playmate for Xena, but she has ended [...]
Zara
On the 31st of October last year I was browsing Facebook like any other day and I scrolled upon a post by my friend. She was looking for a home for two little fur ball. I phoned my Dad at work and very casually asked him what he thought of another kitten – thankfully he [...]
Marley
Marley is the dearest little kitty you will ever meet! He is the first cat I have ever owned and I’m completely sold on them, having previously been a dog person. This may be due to the fact that he could (possibly) be half dog, half cat and half human. He plays fetch, will meet you [...]
Ozzy
Ozzy is a very energetic Australian Cattle dog with a huge heart and love for all other dogs. Ozzy is constantly looking for someone or something to play with. He loves to chase anything he sees and comes back when he is ready. When he is eventually tired, all he wants to do is lie and cuddle [...]
Milla
Milla has a true personality of her own! When she is excited her entire body shakes and wriggles around like a little worm. This little girl is happiest when any part of her is touching someone and if not she will move and put her foot on you and continue doing what she was.
