About four months ago I was looking through a social networking sight when I saw a picture of the most beautiful cat that was in need of a home. I had lunch with my husband and he could tell I was distracted and wanted to know why. I mentioned the cat and how I often saw cats that needed a home but never felt so strongly about adopting as we already had 3 beloved cats , 2 dogs and a 17 month old toddler.

After lunch I said I would just go to the vet and see him. When the receptionist took me to the back and opened his cage he merrily waltzed out and came to say hello. That was it , he couldn’t spend another night without a family. The receptionist then told me it wasn’t going to be as easy as that. I needed to meet the lady who brought him in as she had rescued him and she wanted to approve of the new owner as he needed a happy life. Apparently his previous owner had been tragically murdered two years prior and he had been left to fend for himself on the mountain. A kind neighbor would leave some food out . The lady who had brought him to the vet had just moved into a complex when she noticed this beautiful cat on the mountain. When she went outside she met the neighbor who had been feeding him . The neighbor told her the tragic story and suggested that she try and look after him. The neighbor was unable to as she already had cats which didn’t get along with him. So she decided to look after him. He was very happy to be loved again but the lady soon realized that she would be unable to give him the full care he needs as her job requires her to travel a lot so that is how he got to the vet.

Our meeting went well and Kitty came home immediately. My husband was rather shocked, but he was a good sport and decided to name him McEnroe as he made some interesting sounds when in the cat basket. Our daughter immediately fell in love with him. Following him everywhere and telling him stories.

He settled in extremely well but then I noticed one evening about six weeks later that he wouldn’t eat so the next day we went to our vet who ran a battery of tests. The vet phoned me later to say that I needed to pick McEnroe up and take him to an animal hospital as he was gravely ill and his body was starting to shut down. He needed specialized, round the clock, care if we were to save him. I immediately felt guilt for maybe having done something to have caused this by removing him from the mountain but my vet reassured me he had been ill for a while.

He spent a week in hospital which was awful as we all missed him terribly and we couldn’t be certain he would make it. The hospital was very kind and let us visit him everyday and by the sixth day he was definitely getting better so we took him home the next day. He showed signs of being diabetic so we are now making sure to manage his condition with a sensible diet. We are privileged to have such outstanding vets and veterinary nurses in our country.

McEnroe is a reminder everyday of how not to take things for granted as life can change so suddenly and that by opening our hearts even in the smallest way we can be gifted with such deep unconditional love.

Why Hardstyle deserves to win? We adopted Hardstyle from a rescue when he was 8 weeks old. he shares his home with 4 other cats and since he was a little baby Hardstyle has been the most unique little cat. He is talkative and loving unlike any other cat and I sometimes think its cos he knows that he will not have a long live with us so he makes everyday count. when he was 6months old he was very ill the vet late diagnosed that Hardstyle had FeLv and we were told that he may not survive the lung infection he had, however Hardstyle fought it off and after a long recovery he pulled through and is at this moment very healthy

This is Fry, Fry is my baby boy who was rescued off a dump in Strand, they were in awful condition when he and his siblings where found. Fry came in to my life just at the right time, constantly bringing joy and laughter, he is my best friend and favorite clown. Fry is a cross cross cross breed, or as I say a pedigree as his mum is a dog and so was his dad, Fry stands like a boxer, runs like a grey hound and jumps like a kangaroo. When the light hits his face right he looks like a Staffie or Pit Bull, but none the less he is my best friend and favorite hot water bottle and movie companion. The reason Fry is a brilliant representative is because he has gone from almost not making it at all the the happiest most spoiled loved dog ever. Representing all the qualities any dog could want and if not at least he is 100% Mutt.

We moved into our flat in February last year and as we opened our front door for the first time, this little fluff ball entered. Hobbs, our new neighbors kitten. It was love at first sight for the 3 of us and about 7 months later our dear friends finally gave in – “yes ,she’s yours”.
Hobbs is truly the light of our lives! I never ever thought that I would literately fall in love with a kitty cat, seeing I’m allergic – but not to her. I can kiss her tummy and have no sniffles LOL.
She’s my fiance, Herman’s Pappa se Dogtertjie” and my “Kleine-Kleine Katjie”. We play hide & seek in the flat and even let it be when she started to scratch our brand new leather couches, we love her more.
She gets spoiled rotten and even get a “spa-day” once a month, when we bath her (always a team effort) and she gets a massage from Dad while I dry her thick coat with the hairdryer, afterwards she’s all poofy & pretty!
Hobbs’ has got a loving personality and all our neighbors loves her, she is very friendly and affectionate, her “boyfriend’s” name is Costy and together they are the most adorable couple in the complex!
Please vote for our little girl – she’s the BEST Kitty EVER!!

I think Genghis should be your Marvellous Mutt because he is absolutely the most gorgeous dog and has brought so much joy to my life after I rescued him from Booysens SPCA along with his ginger sister Kayla 3 years ago.
Ever since I got him he has been nothing but magical and we try do everything together.
He is an Akita Inu as he has all the traits including having a very similar personality to the japanese dog in the movies – Hachiko.
Genghis brings a huge smile to my face everyday and I would not be this happy without him.

I got BoeBoe from Marian Nel in September 2012 after she rescued him from the “bergies”. I cannot imagine my life without BoeBoe, but I want you to hear what life BoeBoe had from Marian who saved him and brought him to us. I cannot imagine my life without BoeBoe and Bowtie. Here is Marian’s story. BoeBoe, where do I start?

May the 10th, 2012

I have seen BoeBoe and his human around town a few times. Always wet, or being dragged behind a Shoprite cart. BoeBoe stayed in the bushes just off the N7 high way. As I drive around I always keep a look out, and was happy to see them walking towards a food outreach programme.

I picked BoeBoe up and this face just broke my heart. He was thin and with matted fur and wet throughout his little body. So I asked the homeless lady if I could borrow him for a few hours and we went for a nice wash and blow dry and cut at the doggy parlor

I had a few errand to run and BoeBoe drove around with me for the day. When we went to meet his humans at the place where they were supposed to pick him up, there was a guy there giving me a message to ask I if can keep him for the night as they have stuff to do. So I took BoeBoe to my parents for the night to sleep over in their bed and to be pampered a bit.

And the rest was history as you would say. I would be driving around to check on the dogs I help and I would come across BoeBoe and his humans would ask for me to keep him a bit as they need to do stuff, and BoeBoe would jump in the Bantam and there off we would go.

BoeBoe had been beaten so many times, he has been kicked and mistreated, been cold and sleeping on hard surfaces his whole little life, until the day I caught his human in the act (after being tipped off by a frantic druggy telling me that BoeBoe was being beaten quite severely), I rushed through to where I knew they usually sleepes and found BoeBoe, he was bloody and crawling around. I plucked him up and took him to the vet after hours care, where luckily the blood was from his nose and little mouth, with no other injuries. I was told he had to go back to his owners as I have on legal right to hold him.

I took him back the next day with a heavy heart, but yelled at them with spit coming out of my mouth, telling them of all the foul things that I will make sure will happen to them if this happens again.

I went away for work and came back to messages from the police in their area asking that I phone them. I phoned frantically thinking that something ugly had happened. His human was arrested and asked that I go and fetch BoeBoe and take care of him. I asked for an affidavit as I wanted to make sure this is the last time this poor dog knew heart sore and pain and cold. His human signed him over to me.

I found Boeboe with a known drug dealer but the guy didn’t want to relinquish the doggy as BoeBoe was used to beg for him.

What was I supposed to do you ask? Firstly I put a plea on Face Book for a foster for BoeBoe, then I went to one of the scariest people I have had the opportunity to know. A known drug user and ‘enforcer’ as they call them and just all around psychotic guy who likes BoeBoe and me.

BoeBoe was brought to the vet that night and I picked him up, by that time Sanette had left me a message saying how cute this doggy is and if you know me, you would know I would see this as an opportunity. I phoned her while I had BoeBoe in my car driving in circles and asked her, no begged her if they can foster. She said she had spoken to Deon and I can bring him through.

We were there for 10 min I think and BoeBoe made the most scariest looking poo on the floor in the house you can imagine. Deon just stood up and cleaned it, and I thought, Wow this is BoeBoe ‘s house!

I also didn’t want to scare them off, so I asked if they would look after Boeboe temporarily and I will be back the next Saturday when her husband is back to check and see from there. Her husband was on his way to China for meetings.

Wednesday Sanette sent me these photos and my heart clenched . I asked her does this mean BoeBoe has found his home? And she said Yes! As Deon, her husband phoned to say she must book BoeBoe into the doggy parlor and the rest they say is history.

BoeBoe has come a long way in this year and slowly he is starting to trust people again. He is now living the life he was born to live, thanks to the Meiring family for giving him the love and life he needed so much.

Seuntjie was toe alreeds 12 jaar oud. Ek wou niks weet van ‘n ander honde-kind nie want ek was bang Seuntjie sou dink ek wil hom verruil vir iemand anders.

While visiting the COGH SPCA in December 2012, we bumped into a friend who was working in the Hospital. He showed us a sad, terrified and broken little dog that had been abused and was found with a badly broken hind leg, who happen to look identical to our other dog at home. My boyfriend and I looked at each other and a few weeks later Talulah literally came barking into our lives. It has been a long road with her and we’ve gained her trust slowly. She truly is the Princess of our home and has us wrapped around her little paw. She has filled our home with love and we have so enjoyed watching her blossom into a happy, cheeky, loving dog. From a miserable start to life to a million kisses, walks and a full tummy – she is finally living the life every dog should.

Fortunately he was taken in by Border Collie rescue, who kept him for 5 months and then gave him to us as they felt they didn’t have time to develop his potential. He is highly intelligent, mischievous and adorable! He passed his basic training with a gold medal and is now starting with his big brother, Boodie, at advanced obedience and is learning agility too. He already knows several tricks, and soaks up his training like a little sponge!
