Why Themba should win:
Firstly let me start off saying that Themba has the most fitting name. It means hope and hope itself is exactly what makes her the special feline friend she is to me. Just over fourteen years ago I came to know about Themba. She had been rescued by an animal shelter after her kittens had been set alight by a group of children on the outskirts of Cape Town.
Although Themba bravely managed to rescue her two kittens, sadly they died. She too was burnt, but has since recovered beautifully. Several weeks later a mother cat died in a separate shack fire, but her kittens were saved. Although Themba’s milk had dried up by this stage, the animal shelter gave the kittens to Themba to look after while the team had bottle-fed the kitties. Then miraculously, within days, Themba began lactating and took to feeding the kittens. Her mothering instincts kicked in in a big way!
When I met Themba the first time she attacked me, but I had promised I would take care of her and I was determined to remain committed to this terrified and (understandably so) angry cat. For weeks she hid under carpets and crawled around on her belly at my home, hissing every time she saw me. It was two years before I could pick her up, and another year passed before she climbed onto my lap, but today Themba is now the MOST affectionate cat! I get kisses everyday and she “talks” non-stop too. It just goes to show what love, time, trust and hope can do.
Last year when I was ill she never left my side. She is queen of this household. She has alerted me to an intruder, and even protects the dogs when she thinks they need protecting. Her love is FIERCE! It was fierce when she tried saving her kittens, and it is fierce now as a teenage kitty who does all she can to protect our family. She is a beautiful cat and has a strong but loving temperament. After her treatments (acupuncture) for her arthritis, she enjoys hunting for us and bringing us “treasure”. Thank you Kitty Queen Themba for all you are to us! I feel so honoured to be part of your life.
